Lincoln Square continues to be a vibrant hub for arts and culture, with the Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Circle) offering three new exhibits this spring. Visitors to Lincoln Square can now embark on a journey through Saya Woolfalk’s visionary world in her first major museum retrospective. Spanning two decades of her multimedia artistry, Empathic Universe introduces the “Empathics,” a fictional race of women navigating cultural intersections and transformations. Through vibrant garment-based sculptures, immersive video installations, and intricate works on paper, Woolfalk weaves narratives that reflect her explorations of African, African American, Japanese, European, and Brazilian art and folklore.

Visitors can enhance their experience with Utopia Within, an audio drama available via the Bloomberg Connects app, offering deeper insights into the exhibition’s themes. Additionally, a special gallery performance by the Alvin Ailey-Fordham BFA in Dance program, created in collaboration with Woolfalk, is scheduled for September 7 at 4:00pm. Saya Woolfalk: Empathic Universe is on view through September 7, 2025.

Even more exciting exhibits are on the way! Design enthusiasts can look forward to the May 31 opening of The Mad MAD World of Jonathan Adler, where the renowned designer curates over 60 works from MAD’s collection alongside his iconic creations. This exhibition offers a thematic exploration of Adler’s inspirations, from mid-century modern ceramics in Authentica to the playful satire in Funkiana and Kottler-ia. Other sections like Erotica, Americalia, Metallica, and Animalia showcase the breadth of Adler’s design interests. The exhibition’s installation, crafted by Simon Doonan—Adler’s husband and former Creative Director of Barneys New York—promises a visually engaging experience.

Also beginning on May 31, visitors can experience the first major museum exhibition spotlighting NYC-based fiber artist Dana Barnes. Untamed Gestures features monumental hand-formed fiber works alongside a fully immersive recreation of Barnes’s Lower East Side studio. Her sculptural landscapes, composed of fibers such as merino, yak, alpaca, and silk, create a compelling tactile environment where motion and stillness coexist in dynamic tension. The exhibition invites visitors into a dialogue between materiality and metamorphosis.

These exhibitions underscore Lincoln Square’s one-of-a-kind cultural scene, inviting residents and visitors alike to engage with the arts in meaningful way—you won’t want to miss them!

On Wednesday, April 30, the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District held our 28th Annual Meeting at the David Rubenstein Atrium (Broadway at 62nd Street). With over one hundred people in attendance, it was a wonderful opportunity for businesses and neighbors to come together in support of our district. After enjoying coffee and pastries from Independent Cafe (located inside the Atrium), guests viewed a festive recap video of the BID’s holiday programming as they took their seats.

LSBID President, Monica Blum, and Chair of the Board of Directors, Gary Jacob, gave welcome remarks. Attendees then had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Mariko Silver, the new Chief Executive Officer of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts who shared an insider look into some of the iconic cultural institution’s upcoming events and initiatives. Additional speakers included Councilmember Gale Brewer and Deputy Inspector Candida Pun-Sullivan. Both officials reminded us what a wonderful neighborhood Lincoln Square is and shared their plans to continue ensuring the safety and vibrancy of the Gateway to the Upper West Side.

The BID also took time to recognize several exemplary employees: Clean Team supervisor, Member and Acting Supervisor, Christian Talavera, Clean Team Supervisor Vijai Sumair, and Public Safety Officer Vitaly Krauchenka, who represent the best of the best and are integral parts of the BID’s efforts to keep Lincoln Square clean, safe, and beautiful.

The BID covered several business matters at the annual meeting. Alan Locker, Vice Chair of Finance, introduced the FY 2026 Budget and Annual Report , which each guest received a copy of in addition to their own neighborhood guide. Board Chair Gary Jacob introduced an amendment to the District Plan & Assessment Formula, and Treasurer and Chair of Nominations, Maura Hayes, led the election of 17 Directors and Alternates to our Board. We welcomed returning Board Directors and Alternates and new members,  We are thrilled to welcome new members Dr. Jerry Balentine from NYI, Anthony Mazzocchi from Kaufman Music Center, Dr. Mariko Silver from Lincoln Center, Travis Proulx from Fordham University, Michael Cohen of Colliers to our board.

Porter House Bar and Grill (10 Columbus Circle) will host a champagne lunch where you can start the festivities early on Saturday. On Mother’s Day, Porter House will offer seasonal items like crispy soft-shell crab, its iconic prime rib trolley service, and strawberry shortcake. Bar Boulud (1900 Broadway between 63rd and 64th Street) will serve à la carte brunch and dinner with Mother’s Day specials like jumbo lump crab cakes, seafood risotto, and ricotta cheesecake. Students at The Juilliard School will be performing throughout the day. The Drama Division will present An Absolute Turkey at 1:00pm and 8:00pm (155 West 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue), while the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra will take the stage at Dizzy’s Club (Broadway at 60th Street) at 5:00pm and 7:00pm for a tribute to Duke Ellington (the shows at Dizzy’s are sold out online, but walk-up reservations are accepted). Over at the Metropolitan Opera House (30 Lincoln Center Plaza), Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra join top high school bands for the Essentially Ellington Festival final concert at 2:00pm.

On Thursday, April 24, Time Magazine’s Time 100 Summit will take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There will be production activity related to these events in the curb lanes and sidewalks around 10 Columbus Circle through Friday, April 25.

Residents and Buildings: Prepare for Mandatory Composting

As of April 1, ALL NYC residents are subject to fines if they do not separate organics from regular trash. About 40% of all residential waste is organic waste, which creates greenhouse gases in landfills as it decomposes. That’s why separating organic waste from trash and recycling can be a step towards solving the climate crisis. Learn more about the City’s Curbside Composting program here. The NYC Department of Sanitation will host a free information session about the City’s mandatory composting rules on April 24 at 6:00pm. 2025 Good Neighbor Awards

Goddard Riverside’s Good Neighbor Awards celebrate uncompensated community members’ outstanding efforts to help improve the community. Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal is partnering with the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan to host a shoe drive. Now through Friday, May 16, you can donate new and gently used children’s shoes. Comment on Local Law 39 (Related to Powered Mobility)

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is requesting comments on its authority under Local Law 39 of 2023 related to the certification standards required for the sale of powered bicycles, powered mobility devices, or storage batteries. Specifically, DCWP is seeking comments and feedback on whether any additional safety standards should be adopted in addition to those listed in LL 39, and on specific questions posed at the end of the Statement of Basis and Purpose. Find the full request for comment here. Comments must be submitted by Friday, May 2.

Due to this work, the bus stops at West 65th Street and Amsterdam Avenue and West 65th Street and Columbus Avenue will be closed until 4:00pm. Passengers needing to access the M66 bus must walk to the West 64th Street and Central Park West bus stop.

As of April 1, ALL NYC residents are subject to fines if they do not separate organics from regular trash. About 40% of all residential waste is organic waste, which creates greenhouse gases in landfills as it decomposes. NYC Animal Care Centers Mobile Adoption Event: On Saturday, April 5, from 12:00-4:00pm, NYC Animal Care Center’s Mobile Adoption event will take place outside of Council Member Gale Brewer’s District Office (563 Columbus Avenue at W 87 St).  Voting Week for Participatory Budgeting: Each year, residents in Council Member Gale Brewer’s 6th District are able to identify and vote on ways to spend $1 million on capital projects in the district in the fiscal year. Residents of the district, ages 11 and older, can vote on the projects they want to see funded (no ID required) now through Sunday, April 6, in person or online (here). The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (“Parks”) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Renovation, Operation, and Maintenance of Snack Bars with Options for Mobile Food Units at three locations, including Verdi Square. New York City students in grades 9-12 are invited to enter the PAL/NYPD “Police Commissioner for a Day” essay contest. This year’s topic is: As Police Commissioner for a Day, what steps would you take with MTA officials to prevent and deter young people from participating in “subway surfing”? Free of charge and the only service of its kind in New York City, New York Foundation for Senior Citizens’ Home Sharing Program is a matching service that pairs “hosts” who have extra private spaces in their houses or apartments to share with responsible, compatible “guests” seeking suitable housing. Adults age 18 or older are eligible, but at least one of the participants must be age 60 or older. The program seeks to match persons for whom shared living arrangements would enhance their financial and/or social well-being, promote companionship, and relieve feelings of isolation.
