SUMMARY:Martha Graham: The Mother of Psychological Dance
DESCRIPTION:This centennial exhibition traces the arc of Martha Graham’s groundbreaking career\, centering her visionary approach to dance as psychological expression. Graham transformed the dancing body into a vessel for inner life\, using movement to externalize emotion\, memory\, and the unconscious. By putting the raw psychology of the individual and social collective on stage\, she redefined what movement could express—not just in dance\, but across all art forms. The show displays rarely seen archival materials from the Jerome Robbins Dance Division’s Martha Graham archive\, set pieces by Isamu Noguchi\, and costumes by Graham\, as well as offer insight into the genius and legacy of Graham and the dance company. \nBorn in 1894\, Martha Graham was an American modern dancer and choreographer. Initially proclaimed as a great dancer\, she started to fundamentally change the way dance looked and was perceived when she founded her Martha Graham Dance Company in 1926. \nToday\, she is often placed alongside artistic household names who significantly impacted their medium. She is recognized as “the mother of modern dance” in dance history not only from her choreographic masterworks\, but also her invention of a new and codified dance language. DESCRIPTION:Expanding the voices represented in MAD’s permanent collection\, OUT of the Jewelry Box considers the importance of queer perspectives in the world of studio and contemporary art jewelry. The exhibition showcases an extraordinary gift from Ron Porter and Joe Price\, who have collected and worn art jewelry throughout their forty-one-year relationship\, nine of those legally married. \nOn view are 56 newly acquired works from The Porter Price Collection by queer artists and their allies\, and 22 pieces by queer artists already represented in MAD’s permanent collection. DESCRIPTION:Mounted during the celebration of the United States semi quincentennial\, Folk Nation: Crafting Patriotism in the United States draws from the American Folk Art Museum’s rich collections to explore links between vernacular art and the construction of an American sense of self. Introducing visitors to the concept of “folk” as a category developed in conjunction with the art and antiques markets\, this exhibition positions works as multilayered in their meanings\, imbued with cultural significance by not only their creators\, but also their collectors and subsequent owners. Americans have long preserved objects as a way of telling stories about themselves. Beginning after the Revolutionary War and gathering momentum in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, people turned to early American things to construct a national history and sense of collective identity—an impulse often driven by lingering insecurity about the young nation’s perceived cultural provinciality compared to Europe. \nThis concentrated exhibition illuminates how makers both historical and contemporary have employed a kaleidoscopic variety of media to express love of country while also revealing the complexities and contradictions embedded in such expressions.

DESCRIPTION:Pucci Amanda Jhones is a storyteller whose rich\, smooth\, original voice makes each song feel lived in rather than revisited. \nBorn in Newark\, New Jersey\, she draws from the blues and jazz tradition inspired by her father\, Horace Luke Wooten\, blues singer\, harmonicist\, and self-taught pianist\, who taught Pucci to take her blues interpretations down to the cotton fields of the South. \nA graduate of the New School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Classical and Contemporary Music\, she has recorded with\, shared the bandstand with\, and opened for many jazz legends like Kenny Barron\, Reggie Workman\, Houston Person\, Stanley Turrentine\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Freddy Cole. Her debut album on Cadence Sweet Dreams established her within a lineage of straight ahead jazz practitioners. Her subsequent recordings Wild Is the Wind and Love Jhones — documented a consistent approach: standards treated as flexible frameworks rather than fixed scripts. \nInternationally\, Pucci has performed throughout Asia\, Europe\, and the United States. Extended residencies at the Renaissance Jazz Club in Kuala Lumpur\, the Half Note Jazz Club in Athens\, Q Jazz Club in Istanbul\, the Park Hyatt in Shinjuku\, Tokyo\, and a three-year residency at The Living Room at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit in Bangkok cemented her global profile. A sold-out\, fifteen city tour of Russia with the Daniel Kramer Trio expanded her audience in Eastern Europe and reinforced her standing as a vocalist comfortable in varied ensemble settings. \nNew York remains her artistic base; she has performed at the Blue Note\, Birdland\, Smalls\, Mezzrow\, Central Park SummerStage\, Jazz at Kitano\, Harlem Jazz Museum\, and now\, Dante Park!
